Christos Tsantilis and Ka: Merlin’s Kitchen

Producer/engineer/studio designer Christos Tsantilis mixed and mastered the third album from veteran Brownsville, Brooklyn-based rapper/producer Ka, The Night’s Gambit (Iron Works), which received critical acclaim upon its summer release. Ka self-produced and self-released this effort, featuring his stark beats and intensely hushed, sometimes understated delivery of deeply reflective and evocative lyrics. Tsantilis and Ka worked together in Merlin’s Kitchen, Tsantilis’ studio on Staten Island.
“It’s a well-balanced room, very cozy and well-tuned, fitted with PMC monitors and mini computer speakers,” Tsantilis says. “The first track on the album set the vision, so we focused on that until we both felt we had clinched it. The rest just flowed after that. All sessions were in Pro Tools. I prepped tracks with basic EQ via Sonnox plug-ins and NTI Nightpro and API outboard. [I applied] slight compression with TK Audio and Manley Variable Mu Stereo compressors, among a few other comps, as well. Delays and reverbs were all added in as the mix came to gel.”

"Beyond the Beyond"
A sneak preview of Beyond the Beyond reveals something deep. Lloyd has been working on some of these songs for decades, and his partnership with David has crystallized in ways unnerving, disturbing, shocking and absolutely rocking.
Lloyd knows a thing or two about studios. The son of a busy New York City session violinist and an in-demand concert lyric soprano, he first set foot in an audio facility at age 3, where he was seen-and-not-heard during full-fledged orchestral sessions.
As a singer who’s gone on to have a lifelong career, Lloyd has seen it all in recording. That includes enviable sessions with Eddie Kramer – producer/engineer for the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin – at South London’s famed Olympic sound Studios. Vancouver’s Pinewood Studios with producer Bruce Fairbairn (AC/DC, Aerosmith), Electric Lady Studios, the Hit Factory, LA’s Record Plant with Yes, and many more have been his host for tracking and mixing.
In addition to sharing the music, Ian and David want to share the experience of creating at BB4 Studios, which was designed by in-house engineer Christos Tsantilis to be an optimum tracking, mixing, and mastering environment, in one workflow.
“We’re excited to have our friends come and record with us here at BB4,” Ian says. “Ultimately it’s about the sound that you can achieve here, but it’s also about being comfortable so you can perform. I love it here because instead of the big window to the control room, the tracking spaces have cameras that you can turn on and off if you want to. So you have the visual connection if you need it, or privacy as a performer if you prefer that.”
The expertise that Tsantilis brings to the design of BB4, as well as the tracking, mixing and mastering sessions that he oversees, was a draw for the Lloyds. “Christos’ passion for sonic perfection is totally obvious,” says David. “I think of the studio as the equivalent to the human body. Just like capillaries and arteries are important for pumping blood everywhere, every single wire and power line in this facility has been purified to achieve the best possible sound.”
Mixing & Mastering FAQ (MixByStos.com)
1. How should I send my files for mixing or mastering?
Please send individual WAV or AIFF files exported from your session at the same starting point (no MP3s). You can deliver them via WeTransfer, Dropbox, or your preferred link.
2. What sample rate and bit depth should I use?
I recommend 24-bit or 32-bit float at your project’s native sample rate. Don’t up-sample — I’ll handle any necessary conversions for mixing and mastering.
3. What’s your turnaround time?
Typically 3–7 business days for a full mix and 1–2 for mastering, depending on the project load. Rush options are available upon request.
4. Can I request revisions?
Absolutely. Every project includes up to two rounds of revisions — I want you to love the final result.
5. Do you also master tracks mixed elsewhere?
Yes, I regularly master projects mixed by other engineers. I’ll analyze the balance, stereo image, and dynamics to ensure it translates perfectly across all playback systems. Note: If I am mixing, I recommend that Another Mastering engineer master as that is the proper way to complete the project.
6. What genres do you specialize in?
While my roots are in Hip-Hop and R&B, I’ve mixed and mastered across all genres — from pop and rock to jazz, gospel, and cinematic projects.
7. Do you provide Dolby Atmos mastering?
No— I offer stereo, stem, and mastering services for broadcast, streaming, and theatrical specs.
